John Mpamei & The Band -LTO Band Of The Week

Posted On:07.31.2016

What is the history of the band – how did it come into being, members, its journey (in brief) and what does the name of your band signify?

First of all, All glory to God for everything. This band was formed at the time I started singing when I was in Delhi. I searched and put together the best among our community. I myself as the front man of the band with Rambi (bass), Lunkungam (drum), Genei (guitar) and Jonah (guitar+back vocalist) Traveling, playing and singing together with the band has been such a blessing.

We faced and got through lots of hardships together as brothers and as friends. So the band is call ‘John Mpamei and the band’..I named it after myself because this is the answer, my elevator to reach higher and every time I look back I wanna be able to say that I earned it in-spite of all the disappointments and rejections.
How do rejuvenate your creative insights / get the adrenaline going?

This is where I wanna thank all of those who have supported me and have kept their trust in me because of them I am able to stay true to myself and my music and as long as this goes on and with God’s blessings I know I will be able to make it till the end.

Of all the songs you’ve created, which is your favorite one and why ?

‘You and I’..this song means a lot to me because it tells stories about my childhood days. This is one of my favourites.

Can you share about some funny incident that happened on-stage / during performance / with you or the other band members ?

In fact yes, in one of the shows we had to give I suddenly got a cold and my nose was all blocked up. I was so worried that I wont be able to sing so I took every medicine I could find to make myself better within those few hours before we hit the stage. The show started and all those medicines I had taken before started reacting inside and I couldn feel my eyes shutting slowly as I sung. I was very sleepy and it was very hard to control and at the same time try to deliver a good show..(smiling).. but yeah somehow I did it.

So who are your favorites/ Icons/ Role Models in the field of music?

For me and our band surely its Coldplay.

Do you have any interesting fan stories to tell?

This is one incident I remember always..when I was at a cafe with a friend of mine, a lady came up to me and said to me that she is a fan and she has been listening to my songs and it has helped her get through some rough times and for an artist to hear that we helped someone with our music is a very rare compliment because not everyone can touch someone’s heart with their music so that has been a really humbling experience.

Do your songs carry a message / a theme or a story ..if so can you share more on it?

My songs are based mostly on my life experiences. Good and bad ones both..love life, childhood memories, missing home and the obstacles I have to cross to make it this far..its all summed up in my songs.

How has the musical journey been so far for you / your band and what are you looking forward to ?
Music has given me everything I have ever wanted. Music has made me believe in myself and it has also taught me how to stay strong and never give up in striving to reach and fulfill my dreams. And I am working hard and giving my best to go and spread the love of music around the world. I plan to discover and explore great music in the future and I hope to make my community,my state and my nation proud.
Do you have any words of advice for youngsters who want to form their own bands or are thinking of getting into this line ?

Everyone can form a band in a snap just like that but remember this is not something to be taken lightly because only few dedicated ones make it to the top. I just want all of them to learn and make them realize that to be on the top one needs to start climbing from the bottom first. It wont be easy but it will be worth it.

“Music has given me everything I have ever wanted. Music has made me believe in myself and it has also taught me how to stay strong and never give up in striving to reach and fulfill my dreams.”
